This piece was truly delightful to work on.
A lady in America contacted me with a view to getting her father a very special gift for his landmark birthday.
She told me that he father had played Dungeons and Dragons ever since he was a young boy and had kept the same character all his life. The character in question had a magical sword called Gryclaw.
When thrown, Gryclaw would always hit its target and fly back the hand of its owner.
Several drawings and artist impressions had been made of Gryclaw over the years, but it had never been rendered in physical form. Having seen the concept sketches, I thought it might be nice to make the wings at the crossguard and feathered pommel look as if they could, conceivably, work on some level of magical animation. To that end, each feather is individually cut and then pieced together to make the whole thing solid again.
The blade is forged from carbon steel with hand-etched runic symbols. The handle is oak-stained dark green and then wrapped in twisted brass wire. A wall-hanging bracket was also constructed so that the piece could be displayed permanently.
